Event to focus on the deaf and hard of hearing

Downtown will host live entertainment and food Saturday at the second annual Clearwater Deaf & Hard of Hearing Festival. The event will run from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the 400 block of Cleveland Street. The festival is hosted by The Z, a Clearwater-based telecommunications company focused on video relay services for the deaf and the hard of hearing. Organizers hope the festival will serve not only as a celebration of deaf culture, but also as a chance for hearing people to mingle and learn, said company chief executive officer Sean Belanger. Entertainment will include deaf comedians the Anderson Twins, deaf rapper Sean Forbes and an Easter egg hunt. The event is free. The Capitol Theatre will show two films geared toward the deaf, with tickets for each costing $5. Proceeds will go to the Family Center on Deafness in Pinellas Park and the Blossom Montessori School for the Deaf in Clearwater. Jay Polglaze, an organizer, said that about 800 people attended last year’s event, and more are expected this year. Interpreters will be available for accessibility.
